Push that Rock

One evening a man was sound asleep in his little cabin when suddenly, he was awaken by a bright light. The light gradually began to grow until eventually the entire room was as bright as if it were noon day. Standing in the middle of this luminous light stood the Savior of the World.

Push that Rock Brandon ByrgeThe Savior looked lovingly at the man and told him that He had a work for him to do. The Savior then showed the man a large rock explaining that the man was to push against the rock with all his might. When the man woke in the morning he walked to where this large rock lie. When he saw the size of this large stone his heart was discouraged and he was not quiet sure he was capable of such a great task but he did as the Lord had commanded and he began pushing.

The man got his fee balanced, set his shoulders squarely against the cold, massive surface of the rock, and began to push with all his might. He pushed all the day long with all of his might. Day after day the man returned to this spot and pushed with all of his might. In spite of all of his effort the rock had not moved, not even an inch. The man started doubting himself. He felt as if all of his hard work had been in vain and he began to think that he was wasting his time.

Seeing that the man was discouraged, Satan decided to enter the picture by placing negative thoughts in the man’s mind like, “Why are you wasting your time pushing against a rock that will never move..?“, “No matter what you do or how hard you try you will fail! This task is impossible!“, “You are not strong enough or good enough to move this rock!“, “It’s too hard, just give up already!“.

These thoughts began to discourage and dishearten the man and he started to ease up in his efforts. “Why kill myself..?” he thought. “There’s no need to give it my all. This great stone is not going to move no matter what I do.” Then the man had a thought, maybe I should take my troubles to the Lord and get his input on the matter.

effort-baseballHe began his prayer, “Dear Lord“, he said, “I have labored hard and long in Your service, putting forth all my strength to do that which You have asked of me, yet after all this time, I have not budged that rock even an inch. What is wrong with me? Why am I such a failure?

To this the Lord responded compassionately, “My dear friend, when long ago I asked you to serve Me and you accepted, I told you to push against that rock with all your strength. That you have faithfully done. But remember, never once did I ask you to move this great stone. Your task was simply to push.

Now you come to Me, tired, frustrated, your strength spent, and thinking that you have failed..? Let me ask you, is this really so..? Look at yourself. Your arms are strong and muscled; your back sinewed and brown. Your hands are calloused from constant pressure and your legs have become strong, massive and hard. Through this opposition you have grown much and your ability now far surpasses that which you previously possessed.

Dear friend, your calling was simply to be obedient and push, and to exercise your faith and trust in My wisdom, and this you have done. Job well done my dear friend, you have succeeded!’
